'Farm Kids' Cookbook wins Nutrition and Oral Health Months Challenge

May 6, 2014

Prairie North Health Region just completed its annual Nutrition and Oral Health Months challenge (March and April)for elementary school students. This year's challenge was another great success!

Students were asked to focus on the Nutrition Month theme “Simply Cook and Enjoy!” The theme aimed at getting families into their kitchens and cooking simple meals together.  It highlighted the importance of having children involved in meal planning and preparation from a young age, as so many valuable skills can be learned in the kitchen!

Connecting Nutrition Month and Oral Health Month activities, PNHR students in grades 3 and 4 classes were invited to participate in The Healthy Chef Cookbook Challenge that incorporated literacy, nutrition, oral health, physical activity, and cooking skills. Students were invited to create their own classroom cookbook following several fun and healthy criteria.

PNHR received several wonderful cookbooks from around the region. Judging was a difficult task!

All participants were awarded with child-friendly cooking utensils, a children's cookbook and a new toothbrush.

Congratulations to Ms. Hermanson's grade 4 class from Hillmond School. The class submitted a very unique cookbook for “Farm Kids” and won the Challenge's grand prize!

Thank you to all students and teachers who participated!
