PNHR Awards Community Health Promotion Grants

November 14, 2013

Twelve local projects promoting physical activity for a variety of age groups have been awarded funding under Prairie North Health Region's (PNHR's) Community Health Promotion Grant program.

The program focuses on providing dollars to community or school-based physical activity projects within the health region.

The 12 projects/recipients of $500 each are:

  • The After -School Fitness Club - Lashburn
  • Beaver River Archery Club - Rapid View
  • Woodland Dance Club - Spruce Lake
  • Fitness Equipment - Paradise Hill Community Center
  • Learn to Run a 10k - North Battleford Comprehensive High School
  • Positively Parenting & Parent Mentoring Program's Family Swimming - Meadow Lake
  • Fun and Fitness with Coral - Lakeview Elementary School, Meadow Lake
  • Physical Education Program (Yoga) - Holy Rosary High School, Lloydminster
  • FNMI Cultural Education Group - E.S. Laird Middle School, Lashburn
  • Intramural Enhancement - J.H. Moore Elementary School, Lashburn
  • Old Tyme Dance Class - Dorintosh Lions Club, Dorintosh
  • Cross-fit Kids - Cut Knife Elementary School

Recipients of the grants were selected by PNHR's Population Health Promotion Unit staff, in partnership with staff from Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation, and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association. A total of 28 applications were received from groups and organizations in 13 communities within Prairie North Health Region.

“Increasing physical activity in all age groups is an important priority for promoting wellness,” said Anne Duriez of PNHR's Population Health Promotion Unit. “These grants are intended to encourage schools and community groups to think about creative ways to increase the amount of physical activity engaged in by individuals of all ages,” Duriez added.

PNHR's Community Health Promotion Grants are made possible through funds allocated by the Region specifically for health promotion activity within Prairie North. PNHR's Population Health Promotion program invited physical activity-based project proposals from community and school-based organizations across the Region.
