The Prairie North Regional Health Authority held its regular monthly board meeting on Wednesday, August 29, in Lloydminster.

Better Health - Psychiatric Services Plan

An external review of psychiatric services delivered at the Battlefords Mental Health Centre, Saskatchewan Hospital, private clinics, and outreach locations across Prairie North Health Region was shared with board members. The review identified gaps in service delivery, such as a lack of mental health inpatient beds in Lloydminster and a need for more psychiatrists specializing in child and youth and geriatric services. It also highlighted an opportunity to attract specialists by developing the academic mandate and profile of the Region's psychiatry program and reiterated the challenges the Region is experiencing in recruiting registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs).

The review includes recommended strategies, performance measures, and key results in five major service plan priorities: service capacity; human resources; facility and equipment infrastructure; education and research; and quality improvement. It will serve as a basis for succession planning, funding requests, and future program assessments.

Better Care - Lloydminster Orthopedic Surgery Program

Prairie North's CEO David Fan presented staffing and equipment budgets for the new regional orthopedic program based out of Lloydminster Hospital. Dr. Earl Kowalczyk, an orthopedic surgeon, began seeing patients on September 4.

“This is just the beginning of Prairie North's orthopedic program in Lloydminster,” said Mr. Fan, noting other orthopedic surgeons will likely be attracted to the Region in the foreseeable future. “Patients in Lloydminster and surrounding areas requiring orthopedic surgery will now be able to stay much closer to home while accessing top-quality care.”

To establish the orthopedic program, Prairie North plans to spend approximately $1.4 million this fiscal year on increased staffing, equipment, and instruments. The Board received and approved the budget plans as presented, having previously approved the development of the program.

Better Team - Governance

The Board updated its policies to reflect the vision and mission adopted through previous strategic planning sessions. The vision is Healthy People. Health Communities. and the mission is Prairie North Health Region works with individuals and communities to achieve the safest and best possible care, experience, and health for you. Prairie North's values are respect; excellence; engagement; accountability; and transparency.

The Board also reaffirmed its statement of goals, philosophy of governance, and role. The 2012/13 Board Workplan was approved.
