Prairie North Health Region is pleased to introduce its new Healthy Balance Kit as a resource to northwest Saskatchewan schools.
The Healthy Balance Kit is intended to support schools in achieving the Saskatchewan Learning health curriculum goal of “enabl(ing) students to apply health knowledge in daily life in order to increase health-enhancing behaviours and decrease health-risking behaviours.”
The Healthy Balance Kit was developed by the PNHR Health Balance Team. The team is made up of members of nutrition, dental health, and mental health services, in consultation with the wellness coordinator for Living Sky School Division. As the name of the Healthy Balance Kit suggests, it focuses on good physical health such as nutrition, exercise and dental health, as well as mental well-being. The Kit emphasizes encouraging healthy lifestyles as a whole.
The Kit is organized to correspond with the education system’s health curriculum and includes a list of resources teachers can access to assist in the teaching of these topics. Since information alone does not lead to long-term changes in behaviour, the Healthy Balance Kit also includes information to develop healthy school policy and information designed to support families in encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
The logo for the Healthy Balance Kit is an apple riding a skateboard. A contest was held in the fall of 2006 to choose a name for the logo. The name “Nutritious Ned” was chosen. The winner of the contest is Sam Haugham, a Grade 6 student from Paradise Hill. “Nutritious Ned” will soon be visible throughout northwest Saskatchewan schools and Prairie North Health Region. “Nutritious Ned” will help staff, students and community members choose healthy options to establish healthy lifestyles.
Healthy Balance Kits have been sent to all 62 schools that fall within the boundaries of PNHR.
