What is Speech Language Pathology?
Speech-Language Pathology is the study of human communication disorders including disorders of speech, language and swallowing. Communication disorders can be congenital or acquired, and can affect individuals of any age. Speech Pathologists provide screening, consultation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive aspects of communication such as memory.
What do Speech Language Pathologists do?
Speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent disorders related to speech, language, communication, cognition, voice, swallowing, and fluency. Speech-language pathologists help patients develop, or recover, reliable communication and swallowing skills so patients can fulfill their educational, vocational, and social roles.
Who Can Access Speech Language Pathology?
Speech Language Pathologists accept referrals from the individual, families, physicians, health facilities, rehabilitation programs, professional support and community agencies.
A doctors referral is only required for swallowing assessments.
Speech Pathologists see the pediatric (before kindergarten) and adult population in our health region. The school systems have their own Pathologists for school aged individuals. Adult inpatients are seen by the adult Speech Language Pathologist.
